Backup & Cyber Recovery Engineer

Role purpose: Design, implement, and operate resilient backup, restore, and cyber recovery capabilities to protect enterprise data, support ransomware readiness, and ensure business continuity.

Core responsibilities

Engineer and maintain backup and recovery solutions across on-prem, virtual, and cloud environments.
Develop and test restore procedures, DR runbooks, and cyber recovery playbooks; validate RPO/RTO targets.
Monitor backup jobs, storage capacity, and replication; troubleshoot failures and perform root-cause analysis.
Implement immutability, air-gapped or isolated recovery environments, and secure access controls for recovery operations.
Automate backup and recovery workflows using scripting and infrastructure-as-code where applicable.
Partner with security teams to align controls with ransomware defense, incident response, and audit requirements.
Document architectures, configurations, and operational procedures; provide on-call support as needed.

Required skills and experience

Hands-on expertise with enterprise backup and recovery platforms (e.g., Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, Cohesity, NetBackup).
Strong knowledge of storage, snapshots, replication, and retention policies (NAS/SAN, object storage).
Experience with virtualization and cloud services (VMware/Hyper-V; AWS/Azure/GCP backup patterns).
Understanding of cyber recovery concepts: immutable backups, least privilege, MFA, encryption, and key management.
Scripting/automation skills (PowerShell, Python, Bash) and familiarity with monitoring/logging.
Ability to run recovery tests, produce evidence for compliance, and communicate clearly with stakeholders.

What you are going to do

In this role, you will design and improve backup and recovery solutions, ensuring that critical data can be recovered quickly and securely in the face of cyber threats. You will:

Design, implement and manage enterprise backup solutions and cyber recovery vaults
Collaborate with cybersecurity, infrastructure and compliance teams to align with DORA, NIS2 and NN policies
Automate backup and recovery workflows using scripting and orchestration tools
Run cyber recovery simulations and disaster recovery tests with IT and business units
Provide 24/7 support, including ticketing and on-call shifts

Who you are

You are an IT engineer with proven experience in enterprise backup or storage solutions. As a team player, you can communicate effectively and lead by example.

You also have:

Skill with Azure, AWS or VMware platforms
Proficiency in scripting and automation
Familiarity with cyber recovery methods, immutable backups and ransomware
A calm demeanour, good analytical skills and the ability to troubleshoot under pressure

You will join our MIaaS department in The Hague, a DevOps organisation with several specialist teams. The newly established Backup & Cyber DevOps team is at the heart of NN’s cyber resilience efforts, where cooperation, ownership and a forward-looking mindset are central.
